BLACK LIVES MATTER: STATEMENT FROM ISA

As students and members of the University of Minnesota, it is important to act in solidarity with communities that are facing systemic injustice. While being South Asian comes with its disadvantages in a predominately white society, it is important to acknowledge the privileges that come with living in a country and benefiting from the work of several Black activists throughout history. It is crucial that we act as allies by uplifting Black voices and reflecting on the anti-Blackness present in our communities. We echo the statement from the Asian-American Student Union about their views surrounding police brutality. While many communities of color face racial injustice, it is important to reflect and realize how Black communities face a large portion of these instances. We hope you all stay safe and act in solidarity with others. This quote from Desmond Tutu, a South African activist shows how harmful it is to stay silent.

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”
